Blah Blah Gallery presents BOYS BOYS BOYS, a group exhibition organized around a curatorial premise both simple and strangely uncommon: a show of artists who are men. Blah Blah Gallery’s program has historically included a significant number of women and non-binary artists. While gender has certainly been part of the context, it has not typically been the organizing premise of the exhibitions themselves. Shows are more often built around formal affinities, shared questions, and conceptual relationships that emerge between practices. BOYS BOYS BOYS briefly reverses that logic. Rather than building an exhibition from the work outward, the exhibition adopts a more direct framework: the artists included are all men. At first, the premise may read as a joke. It is also a deliberately reductive one. When exhibitions are organized around other categories, however, a similar reduction is often accepted without question. The project is conceived as a form of satire. By applying a curatorial structure more commonly used to group artists who are not men, the exhibition highlights the limitations of gender as an organizing principle when treated as a primary framework.The exhibition brings together work by Adam Lovitz, Branche Coverdale, Charles Hickey, Kevin Sabo, Luke Forsyth, Michael Saunders, Nasir Young, Nicolo Gentile, Samuel Richardson, Scott Vander Veen, and Todd Stong. Spanning painting, sculpture, and installation, their practices diverge widely in form, material, and subject. The work itself remains serious and varied. The humor lies in the framing. What happens when the default becomes the premise?
